Thank god for Netflix

I’ve been away for a while, but I’m committed to keep this blog up and running… So here is my first post of 2017!

Last year I focused on reading books and watching tv shows that I always heard good things about or were having good reviews at the time. These are the last four shows that I watched and they came from one of the best inventions of these last few years… Netflix! (They are responsible for the production and distribution of amazing new shows, but also for bringing back shows that were over [*cof bring back Pushing Daisies cof*]).

Orange is the New Black
OITNB is an american comedy/drama television show and has been on air since 2013 and it’s one of the most watched shows on Netflix. The story is based on a true story and tells us how Piper Chapman survives in prison, but mostly this series shows us how to overcome numerous struggles in prison and in life itself. Every episode features flashbacks of important events from an inmate or prison guard past that will explain to us how the inmate got themselves in prison and/or develop the character’s backstory.  Furthermore, the series focus mostly on how corruption, drug smuggling, discrimination, funding cuts, overcrowding and guard brutality have an impact not only on the prisoners’ health and well-being, but also on the prison’s ability to fulfil their responsibilities and ethical obligations. In general I loved the show and found some parts very amusing, but also so grounding. There were moments where you could identify with these prisioners and what they had to do sometimes save themselves. In the last season the subjects addressed became a little bit more dark even ending with two shocking last episodes! Neverthless, I’m very excited to see what the next season will bring us in terms of plot as it ended with a cliffhanger.

Stranger Things
Well this one is the biggest surprise of 2016… Stranger Things is an american science fiction-horror web television series set in the 80s. The first season focus on the disappearence of Will, a 12 years old boy that vanishes mysteriously. With the help of Police Chief Jim Hopper, Will’s mother Joyce launch their own investigation with a little side help from Will’s older brother. In the meanwhile, Will’s friends Dustin, Mike and Lucas discover a psychokinetic girl, Eleven, lost in the woods who claims to know where Will is so they join forces to do some investigation of their own. But as the truth is uncovered, a sinester government organization tries to cover it up, while a more threatening force is lurking close to them. This show was a hit and it received critical acclaim for its characterization, atmosphere, acting, soundtrack, directing, writing and homages to the 80s. If you love sci-fi this is a show that I highly reccomend because you’ll see not only the monsters, but also the soft side… What a mother will do for love and what friendship is all about. Also after this you’ll be singing The Clash “Should I Stay or Should I Go” all day and night!

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life
This is an old one… Everybody knows Gilmore Girls and the struggles mother Lorelai and daughter Rory had to go through their life. This was a famous show from the early 2000’s that ended in 2007 with too much yet to tell. Well, Netflix took us back to Stars Hollow and everything was okay with the world again. The town was still the same… Filled with the same colorful characters that made us fell in love with the show. The main subjects are still there, issues with family, friendship and romance, as well as division between generations and social classes. In this season each episode covers a season of the year: winter, spring, summer and fall. I loved the revival… I mean there were some plots chosen for the main characters (*cof Rory cof*) that were a bit questionable, but neverthless these four episodes gave us some good, funny and emotional moments. Though I have to give a big shout out to Emily Gilmore because that was some amazing character development! With her I cried and laughed the most. But it was very nice to have all these characters back in my life even if just for a little while… I don’t know if it will happen, but I’ve a feeling this isn’t the last of these Gilmore girls. That ending was a bit open to a second season maybe?!

A Series of Unfortunate Events
Lastly but not least, this story that was always a favourite of mine… A Series of Unfortunate Events is a black-comedy drama based on the children’s novel series of the same name by Lemony Snicket. This first season focus on the first books and tells us the story of the Baudelaire’s children after the mysterious fire that kills their parents. The children are placed into the care of a distant relative named Count Olaf, an actor who is after their family fortune. Following Olaf’s first failed attempt, the Baudelaires try to uncover the mystery behind a secret society from their parents’ past with Olaf always plotting against them. The show was already renewed for a second and third season to adapt the rest of the remaining books. This story is behind fascinating, but one of the most interesting character is Count Olaf portraited by Neil Patrick Harris that once again gives us a brilliant performance! Besides this I liked how powerful some of the messages the show gives us like equality in gender and even a subtle mention to an lgbtq+ relationship. This is clearly one of those shows to look forward to in the future! But be aware, and Lemony Snicket warns you in the first minute: “The show you are about to see is extremely unpleasant. However, if you like stories about clever and reasonably attractive orphans, suspicious fires, carnivorous leeches, Italian food and secret organizations, then stay.”

Clash of the celebs

The show is Lip Sync Battle… As host LL Cool J would say “This show is a music playground. Celebraties can let their hair down and be inspired by the songs and artists they love the most. You know what it is. You have seen it on TV… You have seen it online… You have seen it everywhere! The game is simple… Two stars lip sync two songs and the audience decides who did it best!”

The show debuted on the American cable network, Spike and it was a huge success. It’s produced by John Krasinski and Stephen Merchant and hosted by LL Cool J with the help of model Chrissy Teigen as a color commentator. Lip Sync Battle is really a spin-off of a bit introduced on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The idea for the show camed from an appearence Krasinski did on Late Night were they introduced the segment, that later Jimmy Fallon developed into a recurring segment on his show.

As you can guess the game is pretty simple… Two celebrities against each other in a lip syncing battle of two rounds. On the first round the stars only sing and dance, but on the second round they can go all out with costumes, dancers and musical guests! After these two rounds it’s the crowd that decides who the winner of the battle is.

The show is already on its second season with high rates. Actors, musicians, comedians, athletes and presenters all want to be a part of this show and release their stress and just have some fun! We had some good performances through almost 30 episodes… Jimmy Fallon, The Rock, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, John Legend, Myke Tyson, Terry Crews, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anthony Mackie, Channing Tatum, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Tim Tebow, Kaley Cuoco and many more.

I will never forget The Rock singing “Shake it Off” by Taylor Swift or Anna Kendrick singing about the fact that John Krasinski stole her girl with some One Direction… Or Channing Tatum bringing Beyonce to show who “Run the World”. Hell, in the last episode model Gigi Hadid even brought two of the Backstreet Boys to sing with her! Or John Krasinski making a hell of a good Tina Turner and Jenna Dewan-Tatum giving her husband a look of her “Magic Mike” moves…

As you can see, it’s a fun show where celebrities can be crazy and fun, not serious! Although some of them are really competitive… But that only makes the show more fun. And don’t forget Chrissy Teigen that always has a (naughty) good word or comment to say to the stars! Give it a go if you’re looking for a fun show to watch that will make you laugh until you’re crying 🙂

I’m a woman that love superheroes, deal with it!

The other day I saw on Tumblr a set of gifs of Ryan Reynolds in the Berlin press conference of Deadpool where he debunked the myth that women only go to the movies for love stories and that they don’t like action movies. He said and I quote: “I think it’s funny that the studios go, ‘Oh, how are we going to market this movie to women? We have to market the romantic angle. And it’s sort of like, well — no. Women love fucking superhero movies! Clearly they go to these movies. It’s sort of funny that the studios are sometimes the last to know that.”

I never related so much to a quote! I love superheroes movies, tv shows, comics, etc. I love action movies even more! And I don’t like it because it has a deep, cute love story or because the actor that plays the hero is hot… No I like the movies because I love the stories, it’s as easy as that!

I’m like this since I was a kid, really. I loved comic books and I had a big collection of comics… When I got older I discovered that I could read them online and I started reading manga! Besides comics, I always loved watching cartoons of some superheroes too: Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Teenage Mutant Turtles, Sailormoon, etc. I would watch them all on the tv and later on the movies! I watch every movie from Marvel franchise to DC Comics. You can’t imagine my excitment when I saw some of these movies on the theaters! I’m like a kid on Christmas and always wait until the movie really end so I won’t miss any important scene.

And surprise, no matter what I try to see these movies because I genuinely love their concept! I love action movies and to see a team get together to defeat evil… I don’t need a “hot” or “pretty” man to represent a character for me to love it! In fact, I resent the fact that most superheroes are men… Yes Marvel this is for you, where is my movie about Black Widow?! I don’t need a cute love story to get hooked to a story… I even prefer a good and strong friendship between two or more characters that really have an impact on the story! (Yes, this is about Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes!)

I even make people give me Kinder eggs because I get an action figure from The Avengers!  I have some already, but this year I will get more… I have t-shirts and jumpers of superheroes so as you can see I love them, I really love them! You want to know the movies that I’m more excited to see this year? Deadpool, Captain America: Civil War and Suicide Squad! See, it’s all about superheroes with me… One of my biggest dreams is to go to Comic Con in San Diego! It would be like a dream come true!!! To be there in the middle of a world filled with people like me…

In conclusion, yes I’m a woman that loves superheroes not because they have a cute love story but because they are awesome! Deal with it…

It’s just a crazy Office!

Last week I was watching TV at night with my parents and out of nowhere I heard a familiar song… I nearly broke my neck looking at the TV and screamed when I saw that they were advertising “The Office”. It’s one of my favorite shows and I was just looking at the promo like it was the second coming of Jesus! (I have to admit my mom was a little scared!)

So today I’m gonna talk about this amazing show that ended almost three years ago and left me with a hole in my heart… I started watching “The Office” in the same year it ended and I only needed one episode to get addicted! I always liked tv shows with 22/23 minutes because that way I could watch more episodes! I have no shame in admiting that I watched 5 seasons in less than a month…

I used to watch pieces of the show on TV or gifs on the internet of the most iconic moments of the show… Also a lot of people talked about it and said it was super funny and just a good show to watch! Nothing complicated and that made me laugh? Where do I sign to watch it? So for those who don’t know… What is “The Office”?

The Office is an american television comedy show that is an adaptation of the BBC series with the same name. (Just a side note I don’t usually like american adaptations of british shows, but this one was by far the best!) It tells the story of the everyday lives of office employees of the Scranton branch of a fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. This show was filmed like a documentary and that means that there isn’t a studio audience or a laugh track.

In the first episode we are presented to the main characters by Michael Scott (Steve Carell) the branch manager who gives us a tour of this office for both the camera and a temp Ryan Howard (B. J. Novak). Since the first day we get to know Jim Halpert (John Krasinski), a salesman who is in love with Pam Beesly (Jenna Fisher), the receptionist who helps him prank co-worker Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson). These are the main characters, but through nine seasons we get to know so many more: Creed, Andy, Angela, Oscar, Kevin, Stanley, Phyllis, Kelly, Meredith, Toby and Darryl.

I fell in love with a crazy Michael who wants to be the best boss ever (spoiler alert: he really isn’t the best), with Jim and Pam love and support for each other, Dwight morbid sense of humor which really is just so brilliant… Basically I fell in love with the craziness that surronds this company! You get to know these characters and you make them part of you… Sometimes I have situations in my life that from some crazy reason I associate with them, then I just close my eyes and think “What would Jim do? Or better yet how would Dwight react to this?”

I love simple and true-life stories that just brand your brain! I suggest that if you haven’t seen it yet, just go and watch it… Also if you have already watch it, it’s never to late to do it again! So has Kevin would say: “Me think, why waste time say a lot word, when few word do the trick!”

NO!? Why did you cancel it?

I love to see tv shows from all different genres like comedy, drama, action, science-fiction… But what I hate is when I get super involved with the story and the characters and then out of nowhere the show is cancelled! And I hate it more when they don’t give a proper ending to the story. Many of these shows are cancelled because their ratings aren’t that good, but you have to remember the devoted fans and give us a good ending! So these are my fave tv shows that got cancelled way to early and some I even miss.

Happy Endings

The story of the crazy adventures of six best friends living in Chicago: married couple, businessman Brad and his neurotic perfectionist wife Jane; crazy Alex owner of a boutique and Jane’s sister; daydreamer Dave, who has a food truck and used to be engaged to Alex; lazy manchild Max, who can’t keep a job; and single Penny who is afraid to be forever alone and is on a search for Mr. Right. This show was a comedy and very similar to Friends or HIMYM, but it was a fun show to watch. The last episode of the show ended with a clifhanger and we’ll never know what happened to these crazy friends.

Pushing Daisies

This show centers itself on the life of Ned, a pie-maker, that was gifted with the mysterious ability to bring people/animals back from the dead by touching them. Although his gift came with some conditions, for example if something is revived for more than one minute, a similar life close to him will drop dead to balance the universe. The story starts when he brings back from the dead Chuck, his childhood sweetheart and together with a detective they solve crimes. This show had so much to give and I was really sad when it ended. They should bring it back or do a movie!

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Everybody knows a little bit about Terminator because of the movies and although I didn’t like them, I loved the show. The story was set in 1999 when Sarah and her son John are visited by Cameron, a Terminator that has been re-programmed to protect John. They are running from other Terminator, Cromartie, that was sent back to kill John, and also by an FBI Agent James Ellison, who believes that Sarah is an insane criminal. To run from Cromartie they have to jump to 2007. This show was set to have another season, so 2nd season ended with a major clifhanger that set John in the future reuniting with his father, uncle and a human Cameron.

This show only had 8 episodes before it was cancelled but had an interesting plot. The story focused on the Valentine family, a group of gods living amongst humans. They had to hide their true identities and do whatever it took to bring soulmates together. In modern times, the gods’ techniques weren’t working and unless they improved their matchmaking skills they would end up mortals. The goddess Aphrodite then decided to recruit a romance novelist to help them. I really like mythical stories so I was sad that this show didn’t have enough ratings to stay.

Veronica Mars

The plot of this show was about Veronica Mars, a student who gets inspired by her detective father, and goes from high school to university while also being a private investigator. In each episode, Veronica would solve a different crime or case while working to solve a more complex mystery, the death of her best friend. The show was really good but got cancelled with another major cliffhanger ending. Although the fans had better luck this time, because 2 years ago a movie was released that gave us some closer! The producers and actors were so sad that the show ended that way, that they did a crowdfunding iniciative to make the movie.
