Captive Prince Trilogy

Books can definitely change your life… There are good books that make you obsessed and you can’t stop reading… There are bad books that you just stop reading or don’t make any sense in the end… And there are “bah” books that aren’t bad, but you just read them and move on because they didn’t awake anything in you.

So I’m here to talk about a trilogy that definitely changed my life… Recently everybody and their mothers was talking about the Captive Prince trilogy by C. S. Pacat on tumblr and twitter. Comments were something like: “Read these because it’ll change you”, “These books are so good”, etc. And you know what? I’m a curious person… So after so many people saying that I should read them, I suck it up and bought the three books. It took them 15 days to arrive and it was bad because I got so anxious. So finally, a week ago they arrived and I just started reading them…

For those of you who don’t know here is a little summary of what the books are about:

“Damen is a warrior hero to his people, and the rightful heir to the throne of Akielos. But when his half brother seizes power, Damen is captured, stripped of his identity, and sent to serve the prince of an enemy nation as a pleasure slave. Beautiful, manipulative, and deadly, his new master, Prince Laurent, epitomizes the worst of the court at Vere. But in the lethal political web of the Veretian court, nothing is as it seems, and when Damen finds himself caught up in a play for the throne, he must work together with Laurent to survive and save his country. For Damen, there is just one rule: never, ever reveal his true identity. Because the one man Damen needs is the one man who has more reason to hate him than anyone else…”

So as you can read there was more in this story that meets the eye. It’s a story about love for your country, but also of forgiveness of your enemy. It’s about treason, but also commitment to a cause. It’s a story about arrogance and intelligence. And in the end it’s a story about two different heirs to the throne that put their differences aside to work together… That learn to love and grow up through all of their adversities. They become stronger with each other!

To say that I was addicted since the first sentence isn’t a lie. I got totally obsessed! I got so into the world designed by Pacat and fell in love with her characters. Damen and Laurent made me feel like I was intruding in their story… I was allowed to be there and participate, but it was their story not mine. It was a honour to be in that world! And the tension between them was excruciating…

Also there were moments through the three books that you could guess what would happen, but at the same time it was always a surprise. (SPOILER = like for example, when you discover that Laurent knew all along that Damen was Damianos the prince-killer! Like I was “Yes! I knew it! Laurent always knows everything”, but at the same time I was shocked at the surprising way that the author wrote that scene) It was always a surprise. You could guess a little bit of the outcome, but you couldn’t guess how you would get there. The author took you through the past and the present with such an easy discourse that got me hocked to the story.

And the politics of the books are perfectly described. You can feel the injustice and suffering of those who get involved in the schemes. You feel that not only strengh will help you win a war, you also need intelligence. Also don’t be afraid of the “pleasure slave” part. It’s a part of the story that will help define both Damen and Laurent and their perspective about the subject. Until a point in the end, that both of them want to end slavery. It’s a trigerring subject but it also changes so much since the first book that it’s worth the reading.

Even  now after two hours of finishing the last book, I’m here in my couch thinking how did I get there? How did these characters changed so much but at the same time stayed the same? What can I do next? And the ending is so bittersweet… It’s the right time to end, but also you want to know more. You want to shout to the author “Give me more, please! Take me there again”. And well, I didn’t do the request personally but apparently the author is going to release this year three new short stories about the books. One will be about Jord and Aimeric (which have a great side story), the other about Damen and Laurent (an epilogue, probably) and the last one will be a surprise. So I’m very excited to read them and please if you’re looking for something new to read, go read these books! It’ll teach you so much and you’ll fall in love with the story 🙂

‘What’s that sound?’
He could hear it even in the slave baths, muffled but audible, the sound ringing out from the highest peak, a peal of notes, proclaiming a new king.
‘Bells,’ said Damen.

I react to “REACT”

I don’t usually follow or subscribe any kind of channel on YouTube… Don’t get me wrong I go to YouTube every single day, but I just don’t follow any particular youtuber. Well that ship has apparently sailed last week because I found a new hobbie… Watching videos from a channel called “REACT”.

This channel was created by the Fine Brothers Entertainment (another channel on YouTube) and you may know them as the ones to creat videos for Kids React, Teens React and Elders React. The goal is simple… Analyse the reactions and opinions from kids, teens and elders to basically everything. The content goes from tv shows, movies, music, games, politics, etc. Sometimes there are even little contests to see if you know some songs or games.

These are such fun videos, for real! And so many categories to chose from like: Laughing Challenges, Gaming, Kids vs. Food, Do They Know It?, Lyric Breakdown, Opinions and Advice. For me the most interesting thing is to see the reactions and opinions of people towards some subjects. Like you know that they have these kind of interviews with previously chosen questions… But it’s so amazing to see different people react to the same thing and with different background knowledge!

I have to admit that my fave videos are seeing for example adults reacting to pop culture or teens reacting to music their parents grew up with! But the most funny ones are really the ones with kids. We all know that a child is super honest so it’s just so funny to see them having all these “adult” and mature opinions about everything. Like I saw another video of some of these kids reacting to Donald Trump and his speechs and I was so surprised… They can see what is wrong and the strategy this man is using to make people vote for him and some of them are only 7 years old.

So if you want to have a good laugh just check these videos out on their channel called REACT  and just watch them! It’s really worth it and the best part is that you can leave in the comments some subjects you want them to make people react to. A really good way to make me use YouTube more and more because now I’m addicted to it 😉

Today I thought long and hard about what to write about and I kept coming back to a fanfiction I’m reading… So I just thought that would be cool to share with you my opinion on fanfiction! Well I spend a lot of time reading it so I think I can do this…

For those of you who live under a rock fanfiction is fiction about characters or settings from an original work of fiction like movies, books, games, tv shows, music, anime, etc. These fics are created by fans of that work and it’s a popular form of fan labor since the upgrowth of internet. This form of work is rarely commissioned or authorized by the original work’s creater or publisher, and is rarely professionally published. (Although there are some exceptions… For example 50 Shades of Grey was a fanfiction inspired on Twilight.) When a work of fanfiction is published, the author’s are legally asked to change the names of the characters due to copyright infringement.

Also fanfiction is normally defined as being both related to its subject’s canonical fictional universe and simultaneously existing outside it. The most popular websites to read fics are and Archive of Our Own and there you can find fics to every person… You have big ones or small ones, chaptered, with explicit content or just fluff, with any kind of sexuality or pairings, etc.

Now that I explained a little bit what fanfiction is, I just have to say that usually the people that look for these type of work are fans that try to fulfill a desire to see different sides of their favorite characters but also to satisfy a need of closer. For example, in my case I began to read fics just because I didn’t like the end of a tv show I watched. There was something missing that made me look for fanfiction where I could close that chapter. Also there are a lot of people that resort to this type of reading because they ship a pair that isn’t canon.

For writers working on these fics is an opportunity to put out there their opinion or how they envisioned a story to end. It’s their chance to express themselves! For readers it’s an even bigger opportunity to read some amazing work… Some of these fics can even be better than some books out there! I know I’ve read my share of brilliant fics that not only made me smile, but also cry and learn about incredible issues. Like politics, sexuality, the music industry, mental illness and others. It’s just a good way to not only read your favorite characters/people fall in love or live their lifes but also to learn about all these important stuff because writers do some intense investigation on these issues.

For me I just like the experience of reading a good story… It doesn’t matter to me if it’s canon or headcanon… If it’s an alternative universe or just real life. I like the chance to read the evolution of my favorite character/people and just get involved with them! I’m proud to say that I’ve read bigger stories than Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and in less time. Now I read mostly fics pairing two musicians (H&L always!) and it has been like that for two years… Sometimes I read fics from other fandoms, but I always keep coming back to one particular fandom because it’s something real and tangible.

Also it’s so important to show support to the thousands of writers out there that spend their free time writing stories and giving life to our beloved characters. Keep up the good work and don’t feel ashamed to show your work to others… Worst case scenario they don’t like it, but the important thing is that you write for yourself.

So now after all is said and done I’m gonna go back to my fics… Feel free to visit these two websites I recommended if you want to explore this side of fan work. I promise you that no matter the fandom or the pairing you’ll find some fic to read and to get addicted to. Be prepared to explore all of your emotions 😉

The night where dreams come true!

Oh the Oscars night… Where the stars align and celebrate the movie industry! It’s THE award show of the season, the biggest honour of them all, the night where dreams come true and tears fall down. A night where friends reunite! Last night appeared to be all this and so much more… Well, last night finally ended one of the most successful memes of the last few years. Leo finally got his Oscar! I’m getting a little ahead of myself… Let’s start with the beginning!

Everything started with the Red Carpet where actors, musicians, directors and everyone in between the movie industry could walk around showing their beautiful dresses and suits. Got to say that last night we got all kinds of beautiful dresses, but Chrissy Teigen and Lady Gaga won for me! The man also looked dazzling with Mark Ruffalo and Tom Hardy winning for me in the tuxedo department. Although I got to give some credit to Jared Leto who tried something different this year but the shoes didn’t work (Sorry!).

After the stars showed up it was time for the proper celebration to begin. Chris Rock, the host of this year, began the award show with some difficult subject, racism in Hollywood. Well, he had to do it! There was a lot of criticism this year towards the Academy for the lack of acting nominations of colour actors. Chris Rock even said: “You’re damn right, Hollywood’s racist”, but he used the controversy to talk about diversity. A truly inspiring and funny monologue!

Well, let’s get to the juicy part… The winners of this year! Spotlight was the real surprise of the night and snatched best picture from the rival contenders The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road. With six awards, Fury Road ran the technical categories winning for costume design, production design, hair and makeup, editing, sound editing and sound mixing. The director Alejandro González Iñárritu won best director with The Revenant and the movie also won best cinematography and best actor with Leonardo DiCaprio finally winning an Oscar. Brie Larson won for best actress with her role in Room. The big surprises where in the supporting categories though, as Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) won the famous Oscar. Also a note for Inside Out that one best animated feature film and for Sam Smith who won best song for Writing’s on the Wall.

So these were the big winners of the night! Leo could finally end a meme culture that has been going around for a few years and got a standing ovation of the room… Even the actors that lost to him looked so happy that he finally got it! Some of the speechs were really moving like Leo talking about global warming and how it’s “the most urgent threat affecting our species”. Even going as far as urging support for those people whose “voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed”. And finally, Sam Smith dedicating his award to the LGBT community in his speech.

Oh, last but not least, go take a look at Lady Gaga’s performance last night! WOW! That woman can sing… I was really impressed with her, truly amazing! Sad that she didn’t get the Oscar for best song with Til It Happens To You. It’s a moving song!

So this is just a quick summary of last night 88th Academy Awards! More things happened and there were so many good after parties and backstage moments, but that is for another time or for you to look it up online 😉

You gotta run from the Red Devil

I watch too many tv shows and the genre sometimes doesn’t matter… Crime, drama, comedy, musical, fantasy, etc. I follow maybe ten shows at the moment and I think it’s too much and I try not to watch more! But sometimes I fall down the rabbit hole and find a new show that makes me addicted to it… This is my experience with Scream Queens!

I don’t usually watch terror tv shows, only can watch Supernatural! The rest of them make me scared… But I was always seeing posts about Scream Queens or gifs/videos of some moments of the show. One day I saw a really specific moment of the show that made me think it was a good idea to watch it!

Spoiler alert right now: I watched a scene where the four Channels were teaching a guy a lesson about Feminism. It caught my eye and I thought that I wouldn’t lose anything watching the pilot episode. I got addicted to it! The show, although sometimes scary, is just so funny and teach us some moral lessons either about sisterhood, family, homossexuality, racism, etc.

For those who don’t know Scream Queens is an american tv series created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan for Fox (you may remember some of these names because of Glee or American Horror Story!). The first season of the show takes place at the fictional Wallace University. In the first episode you discover that one of the sororities, Kappa Kappa Tau, becomes plagued by a group of serial killers that use the university’s Red Devil mascote as a disguise to kill. Chanel Oberlin is the President of the sorority and is one of the main targets due to her snob rich girl attitude. On this season, the Red Devil is reigniting a 20-old murder mistery, that only the Kappa’s know about.

After the huge success of the first season, Fox renewed the show for a second season and some of the actors from the first season will reprise their roles (we already know some details, thank god!). The second season graduates from the college campus set and into a hospital, where some of the most fascinating and bizarre medical cases are under observation. So terrifying funny murders will begin once again and the mistery will prevail! (P.S. I think the concept for each season is close to American Horror Story, although I never watched the show myself!)

Some of the brilliant cast includes Emma Roberts, Abigail Breslin, Billie Lourd, Lea Michele, Keke Palmer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Skyler Samuels and Diego Boneta. On the first season there were also some special guest stars like Ariana Grande, Nick Jonas, Niecy Nash and Chad Michael Murray. I know I’m excited to see who will be on second season!

This show has so much mistery… You can’t even try to guess who is the real killer because they all have motives. You’re addicted to find out who is the mastermind behind it and we need to watch out for the innocent little girls but the crazy ones too. So if you haven’t watched this exciting show yet, do it before the Red Devil catches you and you become a Scream Queen or King!

Top 5 covers :)

So as you might figured it out, I listen to a lot of music and i love it! I’m addicted to it! Always listening to something new or old… My favorite artists/bands or just discovering new ones. But there are also times when your favorite artist/band do a cover of a song you love or a song you don’t particularly like and they make it better! These are the songs I’m about to celebrate.

To make this more fun I’m gonna tell you some of my favorite covers ever made… I love so many of them that I think I’ll make this a regular thing and maybe I’ll post a top 5 every month. That way if you want me to listen to some new/old covers, you can leave them on the comments!

Here we go… Please don’t judge me for some of these:
1. Rolling in the Deep – Linkin Park
I’m a big fan of Linkin Park and Chester’s Bennington voice is just a piece of art… To prove it hear this amazing cover to an Adele song! I have to admit that I didn’t like Adele’s version that much, but Chester just gave it a deep meaning and so much emotion that this is until this day one of my favorite covers ever made. The way the band slowed down the song just made it more emotional and passionate!

2. Drunk in Love – Ed Sheeran
Once again, I’m a big Sheerio! I love Ed and I truly believe is the future of music. He is a brilliant song-writer and an even better singer. So I wasn’t that surprised to discover that Ed could make a Beyonce song even more perfect! This is a “dirty” song and after you hear Ed’s version you just melt and fall in love with it. Not surprised at all!

3. Can’t Take My Eyes Off You – Muse
I’m not a big fan of Muse… Don’t get me wrong, I like some of their songs but they aren’t one of my favorite bands. But this version of Muse from the song originally by Andy Williams, just makes me go crazy! This is such a beautiful song, so romantic and Muse just gave it some rocky edges! I truly love it… It’s sexy and the original message is still there!

4. FourFiveSeconds – One Direction
When this song came out I really liked it and I’m a huge fan of One Direction. I think these now four boys are very talented and truly good singers and song-writers! On their first Live Lounge they just took this beautiful cover from their sleeves… I wasn’t expecting this song, but they made it so pure! Their voices gave it even more meaning with the help of some violins. Just hear it because you won’t be disappointed!

5. Dance With Somebody – Little Mix
These ladies are just so misunderstood because people see them as another girlband! Their voices are beautiful and they made a brilliant job on this cover of Whitney Houston with a little Jason Derulo mixed. They don’t know limits your jaw will literally drop when you hear them sing… Two improbable songs that made a brilliant “mix”.

For this time these are my favorite covers and I have so many more to share with you, but if you have suggestions just leave them on the comments box 🙂

Love is all around us… Or not!

Oh it’s that time of the year again… Valentine’s Day! A day where everybody is all lovey dovey and the love is in the air! This time of the year couples just show the love they feel for each other and engage on some romantic activities: candle light dinners, chocolates, flowers, teddy bears, jewellery, etc. Everybody is feeling the love!

Well not everybody… For some people like myself, Valentine’s Day is just another random day of the year where you’re single. Don’t get me wrong I think you should celebrate the love you feel for another person… I just don’t think that you need a specific day to do that! You should always demonstrate love towards someone…

Maybe you’re reading this and calling me cynical and that I’m only saying this because I don’t have a boyfriend/girlfriend to share it with. But the truth is I think this day is a little over-rated. I think if you truly love somebody, you don’t need a day to show them that… Show them everyday with simple actions! You don’t need to buy a big rock to a woman or anything, just make her feel loved. The same thing goes with man! Just enjoy the time you have together… But if it makes you happy to celebrate this day then go for it! I know that Portugal really needs this crazy consumerism to make our economy grow!

As for me I’m gonna be a bit more cynical and spend this day watching those movies that never get old (Love Actually is really waiting for me)! So have a Happy Valentine’s Day if you have a soulmate to share it with! But if you’re as alone as I am then just enjoy yourself, eat some chocolate, watch some movies and buy yourself a present! Today I saw somebody say on Tumblr that this day is not only for couples, is a day for you to show love for yourself and to be happy! So that’s what I intend to do 🙂
