A new body-positive makeover for Barbie

Who doesn’t remember what a Barbie is? Better, who doesn’t remember having a Barbie or just playing with one? Like everybody else I grew up playing with cars, dolls and legos but my absolutely favorite toy was my Barbie collection… I say collection because me and my sister had a whole bunch of them! We had so many acessories like dresses, shoes, a kitchen, a bedroom, etc. and what we didn’t have we would make… We used some fabrics to do more dresses and styrofoam and wood to build a house! I used to have the time of my life playing with them…

Unfortunetely when I became older I started to realise that Barbie wasn’t the best example in terms of body-type… The dolls promoted a body that wasn’t real, a super skinny white woman. Later they tried to explore more skin tones and hairstyles, but the body always bothered me.

For a while I thought that they should really try to embody every type of body because kids are so impressionable. If they have dolls with different sizes or races they can realize that there isn’t anything wrong with being curvy, black or tall. As long as you’re healthy, you’re beautiful!

So thursday I got super happy when I saw on tumblr and on the news that Mattel introduced three new body types for Barbies: petite, curvy and tall. In conclusion, now when you buy a Barbie doll you can choose between four body types, along with seven skin tones and 22 eye colors.

According to Time magazine, this is a big move to the company which is aiming to make the new dolls to reflect their young owners’ world. Also the goal is to use a doll which was held as a standard beauty for so many years to change her looks. This way girls all over the world can have a huge opportunity to see a different kind of beauitful and that Barbie doesn’t have to look or wear one thing in specific… They’re just real girls like any of us!
