Today all of us feel sad because one of the most iconic musicians left us… David Bowie was 69 years old and died today of liver cancer two days after realising his new album “Blackstar”.
English singer, songwriter, actor and producer, Bowie was considered a “chameleon of rock” because he was always changing his image and had an androgynous appearance. Besides that he was an important figure in music and pop culture in these last fifty years and influenced a lot of musicians, actors and all of us.
His influence was not only musical, but also social… He was an avid member of the LGBTQ+ community and participated in a lot of campaigns for the Gay Liberation. Although he had some questionable political views, he changed the life of a lot of people that will always remember him.
I’m not in any way a super fan of David Bowie, but I always listened to some of his songs growing up and they always felt right. You know when you hear a song and it feels right or appropriated for that moment? That was what I felt with his songs… My personal favourite is Heroes! That song always made me feel heroic and that I could be anything that I want and I can be a hero too, no matter what.
As I was writing this post I was listening to some of his hits, including Ziggy Stardust, Heroes, Let’s Dance, Dancing in the Street and Space Oddity, and I just realised that these songs will forever remain with us and will always apply to so many generations. Bowie’s songs helped a lot of people along these years and will continue to help many more. Our sons and grandchildren are going to hear them, identify with them and ask us who was this man that represented a whole generation. We can only tell them that it was one of the biggest stars on the planet!
“I don’t know where I’m going from here but I promise it won’t be boring” – David Bowie.
